Hail Merry Helps Texas Dietitians Debunk Food Myths at the Texas Dietitians Food & Nutrition Conference in Houston this past weekend and Claudia Pillow was there on our behalf.
I was excited to be part of the Texas Dietitians Food & Nutrition Conference in Houston this past week. The buzz in the vendor hall was Dr. James Painter’s session about A Dozen Foods to Add to Your Diet to Reduce the Risk of Heart Disease. Eggs made the list and it had the dietitians talking about food myths. One of the top food myths atoned by “health experts” over the past few decades has been that “Eggs Raise Blood Cholesterol Levels” and elevated cholesterol levels is one of the main causes of heart disease. It's true that eggs have a lot of dietary cholesterol—upwards of 200 mg, which is more than two-thirds of the American Heart Association's recommended limit of 300 mg a day. But dietary cholesterol isn't nearly as dangerous as was once thought. Only some of the cholesterol in food ends up as cholesterol in your bloodstream, and if your dietary cholesterol intake rises, your body compensates by producing less cholesterol of its own. Now eggs are a “Superfood” list favorite in 2011.

Another top food myth dating back to the 1970’s is that “All Saturated Fats Raise Blood Cholesterol”, including coconut oil. But this myth is simply not true and Hail Merry is on a crusade to set the record straight. Plant based fats like that of olive oil and coconut oil do not contain cholesterol and in their raw state they both help lower bad cholesterol. In fact, Dr. Oz recently did a show on the health benefits of coconut oil, including its ability to boost metabolism and help prevent and heal stomach ulcers. Click the following for more about coconut oil’s health benefits.
And let me just say, the more I explained the health benefits of coconut oil the more the Texas dietitians ate it up- literally! Our Macaroons and Grawnola flew off the table. Yes, a serving of our Blonde Macaroons contain 2 grams of fiber and only 10grams of carbohydrates but what the dietitians raved about most was the TASTE. Even people that swore they didn’t like anything with coconut loved the deliciously chewy moist Blonde Macaroons. Healthy oils, great taste, and fiber all in one perfect gluten-free, casein free snack solution. Feed Your Body Royally!
