Dark chocolate is often touted as a healthy, energizing “Superfood” because it is rich in so many compounds that fight inflammation and chronic disease, such as flavonoids, magnesium and theobromine. We combine the health benefits of dark chocolate with heart healthy almond milk and potassium rich bananas for a high fiber, nutrient dense Chocolate Banana Smoothie.
What are flavonoids, magnesium and theobromine?
- Flavonoids- are plant-based antioxidants that neutralize free radicals and are associated with reduced risk of heart disease, ulcers, viruses, inflammation, osteoporosis, arthritis and diarrhea.
- Magnesium- is an essential alkaline mineral required for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. Health benefits of magnesium include: transmission of nerve impulses, energy production, aids in the absorption of calcium and the formation of strong bones and teeth, improves muscle functioning, and aids in the treatment of diabetes, osteoporosis, migraines, insomnia and depression.
- Theobromine- is the bitter alkaloid of the cacao plant, which acts as a mild heart stimulant to help regulate blood pressure and an effective cough suppressant.

Would be REALLY helpful if we could find a printer friendly box to click and print this recipe!!! Thanks.
Great idea- we will get to work on this!
Oh yum! I just made this, using 1 cup freshly made veggie/apple juice and two tablespoons of almond butter instead of the almond milk. It's heavenly (says even my bother-in-law who does not eat remotely close to raw or vegan)! This recipe is a keeper. Thanks!
Thank you for the great suggestion!
